Classes Toddler Time - Toddler (18 Mon. - 2 1/2 Yrs)Toddler Time is full of stimulation in sight, touch and sound. It is a parent and child (ages 18 months to 2 1/2 years) movement program which uses props, music and dance activities to encourage creativity. The class is 30 minutes and parents participate in the lesson, making it both a bonding experience and the best introduction to dance imaginable. Basic dance skills are introduced and the focus of the class is to develop physical coordination and practice social and gross motor skills. Through this experience the children will also foster a sincere love for music and movement. Kidz Dance - Preschool (3-4 yr olds) Teaching dance to children is a responsibility. There is far more to the job than showing steps to youngsters and having them practice. Kathy Coughlin has developed her preschool program thru many years of study. A child’s introduction to movement will determine their future interest and attitude regarding the art of dance. Each and every class our educators conduct is exciting, special, slightly awe inspiring and leaves the dancer feeling personally connected to the dance world. The purpose of dance education for children 3 and 4 is to open their mind to creative thoughts, while teaching basic body control such as balance, and how to communicate physically. Creative dance exercises are used to instill a sense of fun while being thought provoking and an introduction to problem solving. The most effective creative dance activities work with imagination alone, or simple visuals, to teach the many ways our bodies can move and be expressive. Through dance we teach personal discipline, graciousness, a positive self image, locomotive skills, physical control, group cooperation, creative interaction, imagination, quality of movement, problem solving, and physical wellness, all important character traits hard to gain in today’s society. The most obvious difference between students age 3, 4 and older is their attention span. In the Kidzdance program, the length of each class is determined by how long the children can stay focused on the activities presented. Our 3 year old classes are a suggested one half an hour, the 4 year old class – 45 minutes. Beyond that, though we may have more to teach, the children may have trouble concentrating on the physical and mental challenges. It is better to have a shorter class where every minute of dance is productive, and students learn that every moment spent in the dance studio requires active participation, rather than a longer class where children lose interest and wander away from activities. While the basic syllabus of the 3 and 4 year class is similar, we add time for more involved exercises in the four year class. Since four year olds are more in charge of their bodies and emotions, this class can be longer, slightly more structured, using more advanced concepts such as standing in straight lines rather than group circles, moving independently rather than following a teacher and the children can contribute to the class with individual thinking. In this level you can introduce rhythm awareness, posture and physical development exercises. Primary Goals: *Teach a love of Dance and Joy of movement *Create a basic technical foundation for dance *To condition the body and mind for formal dance training *To gain music awareness and rhythm skill *To explore dance as a form of personal expression *To nurture artistry with challenging creative dance exercises 3 Year Old Class: Hello Circle-(to put the student at ease – designed to warm-up the body) Floor Progressions-(to work on basic coordination dance skills by learning chaise, gallops, battements, bouree, skips, ballet walks, hops, and directional marches. It teaches children how to take turns, and gives the student the teachers individual attention.) Creative Dance Exercise-(This part of the class uses aides such as hula hoops, bubbles, popcorn, and scarves. We explore dramatic expressions, this is necessary since the origin of ballet is pantomime. This is the most beneficial section of class for preschoolers. Good-bye Circle-(Formal ending to the class concentrates on a bow. Leaves the children feeling positive about the dance experience.) 4 Year Old Class: The four year old class will be similar to the 3 year old class only at this age we add more challenging exercises.
